![]() The best way I can put it is this: I really like Hop, the character, but really dislike Hop, the tutorial. Give the rival a goal with strength being only a means to an end, so that being strong or allied to you is just as useful to them as being stronger than you. Rival battles are framed as friendly already, just keep that and don't make the player end their dreams by being stronger. You don't have to stop battling them, as the previous person seems to think, just because you're not opposed to them. You can't both be champion, but you can be champion while they defeat the evil team/complete the pokedex/see the whole region/whatever other goals you can achieve in Pokemon. ![]() And sure, it could still be a bit of a who's the strongest/who's way of looking at the world is right, but it's not about who will succeed over the other, which can only be achieved with non-mutually exclusive goals. You're not trying to beat the other person, you're just showing off how much stronger you both are. Or at the very least, competition without conflict. I think the point that is being overlooked here is that if the rival is friendly, then battling them should be about bonding instead of competition. In the future, if the rival HAS to be the players friend, can we please give then a goal other than the players? With Hugh, every defeat is actually good for his goal, because he knows your strong enough to be trusted. It doesn't feel good to make your friend sad all the time. Beating Hop and destroying his dreams doesn't feel satisfying because Hop isn't antagonistic. And he actually did it! (With obvious help from the PC of course)Ĭompare that to Hop, who is also a friend, but his goal is to become champion like his brother Leon. He didn't set out to become league champion, he simply wanted to get back what was stolen from him, and destroy team plasma so it can't happen again. At the end of victory road, he encourages you to challenge the league, because his job is done. His motivation isn't to be league champion like most others, but to get revenge on Team Plasma for stealing his sisters Purrloin, that we learn later was captured by his late grandfather. He HATES team plasma, and this is where the genius of his character come across. Hugh is nice to the player character like all modern rivals, but he clearly still has an edge to him. While some have been worse than others (Ruby and Sapphire is easily the worst as you battle May all of 4 times and don't see her starters final form.) The only one I think really succeeds is Hugh. Its clear that after gen 2 GF decided the rival shouldn't be an antagonist.
